June 27: Judie Erickson, Minnetonka, MN USA

I would like to be in contact with any descendants of Knud Johannessen Hemmingstad (born 19 Sep 1819 in Hemmingstad) from Haugesund area. He married Marthe Halvorsdatter Danielsen in Skaare on 14 Jul 1870.  He was my great grandfather and his son Hans Andreas Knudsen Hemmingstad (born 14 Jul 1873 in Haugesund) was my grandfather.  Hans immigrated to the US with his brother Mandius (born 18 Jun 1871 in Skare) in 1894.  Knud was previously married to Anne Karine Jensdatter Litlesand and has at least 5 children.  One daughter, Anne Katrine or Anne Cathrine, married Mads Valentinsen Rossebø and immigrated to America.  I would like to find out more  about the   Hemmingstad family in Norway.  I have some records and a copy of a letter from Knud which he wrote in 1899 to his son, Hans Andreas who resided in Minnesota.  Please feel free to e-mail me at jvh999@msn.com if you have any information or are related.  Thanks.

Dec. 27:  Robert Hustvedt-Sherwood, Inverness, Florida, USA

Hallo from sunny South Florida. Robert Hustvedt-Sherwood, Sr. 3507 S Dalton Terrace, Inverness, Florida 34452. I am curious about the birthplace of my uncle Melvin Quam's parents. I know they came over to America in the late 1800's or early 1900's. My uncle had mentioned that they came from somewhere North of the Haugesund area. If anyone knows anything about the Quam family in Norway, I would really appreciate any information you can give me.

July 09: Valerie Reynolds, Texas, USA

Hallo from Central Texas, USA!!

Just touching base regarding my previous message [see below] that I had posted 1.5 yrs. ago. Still searching for information on my great grandfather, Karl/Carl Olsen/Olson. Possibly came from the Tysvaer, Haugesund area. Not absolutely positive on that, but contact with a researcher/friend in Bergen [Lillian... please contact me if you find this message! Please!] shows a family from the Tysvaer bygedeboks that may be my grandfather's family. I have copies of my grandfather's death certificate, and his marriage certificates, but none of them give birthplace information except for naming Norway as country of birth. Have also found out recently from my grandmother that she remembered her father telling her once that one of his cousins was a secretary to King Haakon [sp?] during the early 1900's. Of course she had no name that she could remember. But I thought it was an interesting clue. I would greatly appreciate any information from anyone who knows something on this family. I don't want to intrude on any possible family members, and I don't want anything from anyone, other than to know that I have been able to find my grandfather's family and to maybe learn more about his early years. I can still be contacted at either of these addresses: reynoldsv_5663@hotmail.com  or txreyn5663@earthlink.net

Thank you most sincerely,
Valerie Reynolds

Previous message (Oct 2005):

Found your site several years ago and think that it's great! Hoping that someone will see this and "relate" to my info. Have been searching for info on my great grandfather, Karl ( aka "Carl" and "Carl K." after immigrating to the US) OLSEN or OLSON; b. Oct 1879 in Norway. Parents names were Knut/d OLSEN (OLSON) and "Susen" Sigveson (name was found on Karl's application for a Social Security #). Had a contact in Norway, Lillian K., [haven't heard from her in a long time - Lillian you out there??] who had been trying to help locate Karl's ancestors through bygdeboks that she borrowed, and thought she may have found them... not absolutely positive, but looked promising: Knut Olsen Hundsnes b. 1833; d. 1892; married to Synnove Sigvesdtr Hundsnes b. 1840 (daughter of Sigve Sjursen Hundsnes and Synnove Torbjornsdtr Nedrebo). This family was in the Haugesund area, possibly in Tysvær for a while. Karl came to the US [may have left Norway from the port of Stavanger>Hamburg, Germany>USA] at about the age of 12, possibly in 1892 sometime. Went to live with relatives, but we don't have their names--According to my grandmother, an only child, Karl only referred to his relatives as "Aunt" or "Uncle" in Des Moines (Iowa). Have found no trace of him in Des Moines, but he did live in Webster City, Iowa. Found that he was married to a Millie Olsen/Olson [born about 1882 in Iowa - Her parents were both born in Norway, but I don't have their names] on 13 Sept 1902 in Webster City, Iowa; Testimony given by a J. P. Olsen/Olson..don't know if this is a relative of Karl's or Millie's. Karl also lived in South Dakota, and later went West to Oregon, where he remarried in 1920. He died 5 May 1956 in Warrenton, Clatsop County, Oregon. If any of this is slightly familiar to anyone, please contact me! Would love to find my grandfather's Norwegian family & be able to tell my 85 year old grandmother I found her father's family/home. You can reach me at either:
reynoldsv_5663@hotmail.com or txreyn5663@earthlink.net

June 05: Neil Fjeldheim, 11860 Carmel Drive, Lakewood, CO, USA

Hello,  My grandparents emigrated from Haugesund area in the period of 1910-1915, plus several siblings.  Some day I'm coming back as the country looks so familiar even though I've never been...  Mountains and sea, the best of both.  My grandparents have long since passed away, but I believe there are still relatives in the area and the farm still exists.

Facts added June 11:  My grandfather, Bernt Fjeldheim, was the oldest son of Omund Fjeldheim and Ingeleiv Larsdatter Kalveland.  Bernt was born on October 17, 1889.  Immigration records indicate the home town was Skjold.  Other childern included Brynhild, Ragnhild, Lars, Kari, Endre, Emelie, Randi, and Omund.  Bernt, Ragnhild, and Brynhild arrived in New York on February 19, 1908.  Randi, Endre and Omund immigrated later.  I believe the family still owns the farm that all were born on.

My grandmother, Elizabeth Solheim, was born January 31, 1889 in Skaare.  She arrived in New York on April 29, 1910.  Her brother (I think), Lars O. Solheim immigrated with Bernt, Ragnhild and Brynhild.  I know very little of my grandmother's family.  I believe she had several sisters that remained in Norway.

Best wishes,  Neil.Fjeldheim@cufund.org

Hei!

Nov 26:  Lora Torgesen Condon, 4763 Golden Road, Pleasanton, CA 94566 USA

Greetings!  I have family in Haugesund, (Hei! Liv & Ivar!), as well as Vaurhaug,  and Mandal.  I visited these relatives for the first time in Sept. of this year (2006), and I fell in love with this region of Norway.  It is very much like northwestern Washington State where I grew up, in Seattle and the San Juan Islands

My fathers’ family, the Torgesen side comes from Risor, but his mother came from Mandal.  It was a lifelong dream to travel to Norway and meet my Norwegian cousins, that dream has been fulfilled and I can’t wait for my next visit!

Nov 10:  David Kearin, 25/266 High Street, Kangaroo Flat, 3555 Victoria. Australia

He kindly invited me home to a meal.  Where I met his Father who was a Schoolmaster and taught English. Arne`s address was  Oregarten.

It is many years since that time, buy perhaps someone may know of him would be able to put me in touch with him.

June 26: Curtis Barnett, Cheyenne, Wyoming, U.S.A.

I am looking for descendents living in or around Haugesund of Janna Amalie Jakobsen.  Janna was born March 15, 1873 in Velde. Her parents: Thorbjorn Jacobsen Egesbord and Anna Martha Vermundsdatter. Janna came to the United States in 1891.  Her brothers were Wilhelm Andreas Emil, Karl Ludwig, and Thomas Alfred.

Also Janna had a sister Ida whose married name was Steensnaes.  Her son Prost Hans Steenenaes was a Lutheran pastor to the Norwegian Sailors Missions in the U. S. living in San Pedro, California in the 1940's. He is now deceased.  I am looking for an address or email address for his daughter Veslemoy, married to Dr. Ernst Ornenass.  Thank you very much for whatever help you can give.

June 17: Bryan Hewer, UK

Hello, I live in U.K. and recently purchased two books of postcards from America.

I discovered, when they arrived, that they were all addressed to members of the BLOM family.  Half of the postcards were posted from Haugesund to Brooklyn, New York, between 1906 and 1910.

The cards show Haugesund at that time.  There was an ANTON BLOM and a BENJAMIN BLOM.  I wonder if any of their descendants still live in Haugesund.

Mange patriotiske hilsener fra Runa A. Jensen

Hello, My name is Shelly Vikse. I am 40 years old & I live in Southern California. I saw your photos of Vikse in Norway on the internet. It is my understanding that my great grandparents moved to America from some where near that area. I believe they came from Haugesund but I am not certain. I know VERY little about that area or the people of Vikse or Haugesund. For that matter, I know very little about my great grandparents. Could you please tell me if Vikse is a common last name in Norway? Or is it rare & is there any connection to the place called Vikse and people with the last name Vikse? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You,

Greetings from the shores of Lake Michigan's Little Bay De Noc.  I had the wonderful suprise of meeting a family from Norway-also residents of the "U.P."  Please drop me an email, I am readying myself for retirement and a trip to Norway in the coming years.  Any of the Norske Hoversholms-lets re-establish our communications.  I look forward to recieving some email from my family across the pond and from my fellow YooperNorske.

Oct 10: Stan and Pet Hansen, USA ?

We are looking for relatives of my husband's family in Norway.  His father Conrad (born Konrad Edvartsen Vasdal ) emigrated to the Craigmyle area of Alberta Canada in 1926.  His mother's parents emigrated we think from Stavanger  to Churches Ferry North Dakota USA in 1907.  Their names were Ole and Lena Aaserud.  They moved to the Craigmyle Alberta Canada area in 1909.  We would love to hear from any family left in Norway.

Oct 09: Valerie Reynolds, USA

Hei from Central Texas, USA!!
