Sommeren 1992 rasterte en skogbrann et
2000 dekar stort fjell- og heiområde midt i Sveio. Røykskyen
fra brannen var synlig i hele regionen vår. Brannen, som varte i
mange dager, sperret i en periode hovedveiforbindelsen mellom Haugesund
og Valevåg. Ettersom årene er gått, begynner det
så smått å gro til igjen rundt Hopsfjellet, men det går
sent.
Mange har undret seg over hvorfor
området ligger der som et sår i terrenget, og ikke er blitt
ryddet. Men - det er faktisk ikke meningen, for skogbrannfeltet er nylig
gjort til Naturreservat og skal ligge uberørt slik at naturen får
gå sin gang. Universitet i Bergen har ansvaret for å
å drive forskning i området og sikre kunnskap om slike hendelser
og følgene det får for plante og dyreliv. Og - det begynner
å skje ting i det som før var skogbunn:

Summertime 1992, a 2000 decare forest
area by the mountain Hopsfjellet in Sveio, just north of Haugesund, was
destroyed by fire. Clouds of smoke covered our region for days, as the
fire lasted almost a week. Part of the time, they even had to close the
main north-south road between Haugesund and Valevåg (towards Bergen),
as the fire crossed the road by Hop. As time goes by, it has started growing
again in the area around Hopsfjell, but it is a slow process.
Many of us have been wondering why the
area has been left untouched. The fact is that the area is used for research
by the University of Bergen, and has been declared to be a nature reserve
where things will develop the natural way.
