Torggaten er byens mest sentrale gate,
men på grunn av sin funksjon og beliggenhet, vil nok noen synes at
det ville vært riktigere å kalle den Kirkebakken. Navnet sitt
har den imidlertid fra gamle tiders Haugesund, da området mellom
Haraldsgaten og Sørhauggaten fungerte som torg.
I egenskap av å være nettopp
kirkebakke, blir den nå rustet opp til 100-års jubileet i mars
neste år. Gaten skal tilbakeføres til å ha sitt opprinnelige
veidekke, nemlig brostein. Dermed blir opprustingen av gaten fullført,
etter at Torgbakken med Fiskerne ble omgjort til park med fontener og bekker
på 80-tallet, og selve torget mellom Haraldsgaten og Sørhauggaten
ble ferdig i fjor. Dermed blir aksen mellom Indre kai og kirken svært
presentabel - og til pryd for byen vår.

Torggaten (the market street) is the most
central street of Haugesund, but some of us feel that a more correct name
today would have been: Kirkebakken (The church hill). However, in old Haugesund,
the street was used as a market place.
In connection to the church jubilee next
March (2001), the street is changed to have its previous road surface,
with cobblestones. This is the final part of the upgrade project,
starting in the 80's with making a park with water sculptures in Torgbakken,
and the new pavement on the market area, finished last year. The result
will be a more presentable street - making the town look better for us
and our guests.
