| Todays issue has been planned
for 2 years, since I got a wish from a Utsira connected Norwegian - US
citizen about pictures from this most western point of Norway. Today I
brought my bicycle - and had a busy 1,5 hour stay there.
To get to Utsira, we have one choice (
except from with a private boat or helicopter): We must use the passenger
and car ferry MV "Utsira" on a 1 1/4 hour open sea tour. Today we had good
weather. But some rolling that gave many of us unused to it light seasickness.
When staying outside on the deck in the fine weather, the bad feeling disappeared.
Utsira is the smallest community of Norway,
with app. 230 citizens living on this "tiny" island of just 6,15 sq. km.
When passing in a boat, it seems to be just some unhabitable rocks. But
when we arrive, we find trees, fields, gardens, wild flowers and a paradise
for ornithologists. They have their own church, grocery (++) shop,
elementary and secondary school ( 1-9 grade), kindergarten, home for elderly,
community house with library and swimming pool, 2 fish product factories
and farms. Their own, large ferry, is connecting them to the world with
3 round trips a day to Haugesund (2 on Saturdays and Sundays). If You want
to make a one day visit, or stay the night, they have facilities for that
to, including cafe and a bed.
