No. 608  Lør/Sat Jan 8, 2000
Avaldsnes kirke lørdag kl 13
(Sat at 1P)

Avaldsnes - Norge's vugge.

English:
Avaldsnes - the craddle of Norway. Avaldsnes - the millennium place of Norway? Avaldsnes is situated on the most dense populated island of Norway, but the old kings estate and church countryside is open and attractiv. And it will stay this way in the future.

Historians belive there was a wooden church already in 1024, when king Olav Haraldson attended service here.  The stone church of today was built by king Håkon Håkonson in the period 1248 to 1263, and has details connecting it to contemporary churches in Bergen. (South east wall)

After the reformation, the church was in decay, but the bailiff of Ryfylke repaired the choir (eastern part of the church ) in 1560. Thats why his and his wife Christin Lavransdatter's initials are one the choir wall (towards east). In 1725 the church was taken over by private owners, and the decay was extensive in this period.

But, after the local congregation became the owners in the 1830's, it was totally renovated in 1839. And - in 1922 , the original, large tower in west was rebuilt. Finally, the church was back in its original shape.
