Cold July - but summer is expected From all around Europe,
and other parts of the world, too, we hear about unnormal weather conditions. What we have experienced this July is more like a fall-like
time with summer green surroundings. Rain, wind and expectance for warm summer days. Due to these facts I have not felt for reporting things the last few weeks. But now - as
I start a couple weeks with vacation, I must
give you some impressions - on the first day of a week when forcasts promise a dash of summer:
Høvringøy The Kolbeinsen familiy - with roots from Høvring island ( by the outskirts of Førdesfjord ) had a family reunion July 11-13. Gilbert Simmons, who's grandfather was Kolbein Kolbeinsen, born at Høvring and later on established in Kopervik, invited me to come with them when he heard that I never had been at Hovring island. A total of 170 family members participated in the reunion, 45 of them norwegian americans. And app 70 went to Høvring island with MS Røgvær (picture on top is from the second trip to transport family members between Kopervik and Høvring). Today,
Høvring has no roads and permanent inhabitants, but we found old stone walls and fences on the family place.
Aksdal The community center of Tysvær is Aksdal, situated just 10 km east of Haugesund. Tysvær is a rural community, but has through the last 20 years developed Aksdal to become a tiny town - with modern facilites, culture house, community service-
and adminitration center, shopping malls, church, swimming pool, gas and service station, motel, cafes and more. Here, they even have the "journey to America- museum, telling us how they went, all the norwegians that moved over there 100-150 years ago. I shot this picture from the top of Alvanuten, just north west of Aksdal.
Ryvarden One
of the popular places to visit in Sveio
(1/2 an hour to walk) is Ryvarden, a former
lighthouse place just north of Slettå (piece
of rough ocean just after leaving Haugesund
harbor northwards). This picture show you
the typical
Haugalandet coast countryside that you
experience som many places here around Haugesund.
Dokken
museum is
open for visitors - all summer. You find
it just under and north of Hasseloy bridge,
with old houses, furniture, boats and equipment
that was typical in the "old days"
of our 150 year young town. Picture
show you a group on their way in to the
"Stavahuset".
Haugesund
Indre havn ( inner harbor) is
the main scene for this site. Every day
many small, private boats come and leave
on their way south- or northwards along
the exiting coastline of western Norway.
Haugesund
Birthday August
26 is the official birthday of Haugesund.
Many house owners are working to make
the town shine by repairing
and painting their houses. But
some dont, making part of the town look
slum like. It's a pity.
The
community works with 3 of their own old
buildings. Slaktehuset, Bytunet and Christiansenhuset
is ment to be be looking nice in August.
They are working on them just now.
Hope
for a nice summer for all of us - and that
we can meet in Haugesund in august. I know
some of you plan for a visit.
