Vår
Frelsers kirkes nye hovedorgel Det nye
ledende orgelbyggere, Verschueren Orgelbauw,
mekanisk instrument.

The
new main organ of Vår Frelsers kirke The
new main organ in Vår Frelsers kirke in
Haugesund, Norway, was presented for the
public Saturday 24 and Sunday January 25
- 2004.
Organ
history This is the third instrument
on the organ gallery of the "cathedral"
of Haugesund, between Stavanger and Bergen on the west coast of
Norway. The first one, ready for use when
the church was new in March 1901,
was a 30 stop pneumatic organ from the organ
builder Noreg ( = Norway) in Sandnes. It
was a technically bad instrument, demanding
a lot of maintainance, and had a large overhaul
already 1910. It was removed in 1955 to be followed
by a 51 stop electro pneumatic organ from
Steinmeyer, Öttingen. This organ was a great
instrument, both in size and sound. It's
prospect, with huge, 32 feet pipes, was
impressive and accepted among most people
as a beauty, but it was not at all adapted
to the architecture of the church room.
Originally built for another church
and very large (8 m. deep), it gave the builders lots
of extra work to find space for when it
was mounted in 1955. Walls and part
of the lower tower floor had to be removed,
and the brick stone fence on the gallery
was destroyed to find place for the rück-positif.
The 10-15 last
years it became more and more unstable and
maintainance demanding, ending up with the
1998 order of a new, all mechanical, romantic
organ in new jugend style. It's design ideas
comes from elements in the church room,
especially the altar, completing the work
with bringing the church back to its original
looks after changes in 1955 and early
1970's.
The Steinmeyer
organ was removed by a polish organ company
to be renovated and reused in their areas.
The
2004 Verschueren organ completes
the organ park in our region. We have lots
of new instrument with different caracteristics
from leading north european organ builders
in the Haugesund area churches, making this region
the natural place for the yearly Norwegian
organ festival.
The new
40 stop Verschueren organ is dutch Romantic, built to fulfill
the arcitects design ideas of the church, and
based on how things
were done in the late 1800. In all
aspects this instrument was built following
historical principals. The wind machinery
is situated in the room behind the organ,
and cant be heard in the church room. A new
gallery floor was built, beeing calculated
and strengtened to be able to carry the
11 ton, compact instrument construction.
The gallery fences, both the wooden
and the brick stone fence between the organ
and the church room was rebuilt according
to the old drawings, giving a spacious
area around the console area that can
be used for the church singers or instrumentalists
during conserts or services.
The
organ arrived in Haugesund in two huge 40
feet containers late september 2003. October
month was used to build the organ, November
for the voicers to create and adapt
the sound to the church. From late
November until late January, the organ builder
wanted the large construction to settle
at the gallery, while beeing used for
testing and rehersal by local organists.
Almost nothing needed to be done when the
organ builders arrived some days before
the presentation. Sunday January 25 it was
used for its first service, followed by
an evening consert by Peter van Dijk.
The following
day, newspapers gave both the organ and
the performance of the organists top score.
