 Statue
of Liberty - et produkt av Haugalandet
Er
det sant? Ja - på en måte kan man si det slik.
For det er for lengst avklart at kopperen
som man laget den gigantiske statuen på Liberty
island av er hentet ut av gruvene og produsert
på Visnes på Karmøy.
Statuen
ble opprinnelig gitt til USA som en gave fra
Frankrike. Den ble laget ferdig og utstilt i
Paris før demontering og flytting til USA. Og
Visnes gruver, den gang verdens største koppergruver,
var franskeid.
Så
verdens kanskje aller mest berømte statue -
er egentlig en bit av Karmøy og Haugalandet.
På nordsiden av øyen, langs stien rundt statuen, ligger
en påminnelse om dette, i form av en kopperholdig
stein. Den ble hentet ut av gruvene og
gitt i gave til Liberty island midt på på 80-tallet.

Is
this really true? Yes - it is, in a way! Of
course I know that the Statue of Liberty was
built in Paris, and was a gift from France to
the United states of America. But she is made
by high quality copper, delivered
by Visnes Copper mines on Karmøy, 10 min.
drive south west of Haugesund.
If
you visit the Liberty island, the only activity
you are offered at the moment is to walk around
the island to look at the lady and the NY skyline.
Then, on the northern side you will pass
a small monument, a stone from Visnes given
as a gift from Karmøy, to remind visitors about
the origin of the building material used for
the most famous statue in the world.
